When we exit the subway today, we are greeted by the waving petals of a giant red lotus. Gently undulating in the breeze, the enormous flower is a floating meditation.
We stand, mesmerized. Up close, we hear and see the generator that pumps air into the nylon petals, keeping them aloft.
I wonder: Couldn’t the artist have designed it to work on passive solar energy, or with wind energy–something that would be quiet and in keeping with the peaceful symbolism of the lotus flower, in keeping with the Buddhist philosophy to walk with a light tread on the Earth.
Still, its beauty in the breeze takes hold of me, and I spend much of the hour in peaceful contemplation, watching the petals lift and fall, this way and that, each as the little gusts of wind take them.
